Women of Cincinnati Hip Hop Featured in CityBeatCheck out this week's (4/11/12) issue of Cincinnati CityBeat for a cover story on your favorite women of the Cincinnati Hip Hop scene! MCs, vocalists, DJs, b-girls, promoters, radio show hosts and more. We're everywhere! Much love to writer Mildred IllMil Fallen for all her hard work and dedication, and to all the amazing women with whom I'm honored to share all of our accomplishments. "Ring Around the Rosie" Featured in Metromix Abiyah's entirely a cappella song "Ring Around the Rosie" was featured in the March 7 issue of Metromix as a Song of the Week. Music made solely by the vocal stylings of Abiyah on lead vox and vocal music loops, Dana Hamblen on backing vox and vocal music loops, and beatboxer Marty Spitfly on drum and bass, the song is a hard-driving empowerment tool for the masses with elements of hip hop, dancehall and drum-n-bass tinged with melodic undertones. Wilson (author of Your Negro Tour Guide) on Sunday, April 15, as they co-host the poetry portion of the fourth annual Art & Poetry event at Cincinnati's historic Findlay Market in Over-the-Rhine. Visit local art and jewelry vendors from 10-4pm, and listen to the words of a diverse range of poets from 12-3pm. Bitch's Brew Featured in A-Line Magazine All-female poetry troupe Bitch's Brew, featuring poets Abiyah, Ophelia, Murray and Yvette Nepper, DJ Apryl Reign, and MC Kathy Y. Wilson were featured in the March issue of Cincinnati fashion and style publication A-Line Magazine in the Mixtape Darlings column. Each member submitted a few of their favorite and/or most influential songs, with accompanying rationale. Check out Abiyah's Sonic Youth and Bad Brains/Mos Def picks.Appearance on Open Mike Eagle's Latest Gem After responding to a Tweet requesting "lady vocals" for a Joy Division remake in December 2009, Abiyah began collaborating with LA Art Rapper Open Mike Eagle (Project Blowed/Swim Team/Thirsty Fish/Mush Records). Appearing on Eagle's June 2011 full-length release "Rappers Will Die of Natural Causes", Abiyah lent her vocals to the outro of "Old Member Reclamation" in a redux of the chorus of Blondie's "The Tide is High." Look for an Open Mike Eagle appearance on an Abiyah tune in late Summer/early Fall. |
